Long Branch, NJ - March
5, 2001 - Shore Microsystems today announced the release
of the SM-2508 Gigabit Ethernet Link Protector. The new product
will allow networks to create redundant connections for their
"mission critical" 1000BaseT connections by allowing simultaneous
connections to both a primary and backup network port from
servers, routers, and other key network equipment.
The SM-2508 is an eight port 10/100/1000BaseT
device that protects up to eight critical network-attached devices
by monitoring primary link and quickly switching to a backup port
before network applications and protocols are affected. The
physical-level nature of the switch means that network MAC
addresses and router tables do not have to be changed to activate
backup connectivity. This approach also has the advantage that it
does not impact repeater budget calculations, as would an
additional hub/switch solution. Because of it’s unique design the
primary link can be running Gigabit Ethernet, while lower cost
100BaseT or 10BaseT can serve as an economical backup. Shore’s
unique Straight Through WireTM
technology also allows for connectivity even upon loss of power to
the link protector.
System features include alarms for failure of
any link that are sent via SNMP Trap Messages, automatic switch
back to primary on restoration of service, and auto sensing
redundant power supplies. The SM-2508 is accessible thru SNMP,
Telnet, RS-232 Console Interface, and front panel controls. Other
features include port grouping to allow gang switching of multiple
ports for maintenance applications and Latchmode to allow for slow
to boot switches. The unit is designed for rack-mount or tabletop
use.
